Welcome to the website of the Saint Bernard Club of America! The Saint Bernard Club of America is one of the oldest breed clubs in the U.S., first organized in 1888 only four years after the formation of the American Kennel Club.
We hope that you find our site useful in providing educational materials that
are designed to promote responsible and intelligent breeding of our giant breed. Whether our Saints are family companions or active in a myriad of activities such as conformation, obedience, weight pulls, drafting, or therapy,
all of us are ambassadors of the breed we hold dear.
Responsible stewardship of the Saint Bernard is an obligation that should not
be taken lightly. If you are contemplating Saints as a breed for you or your family, we strongly encourage you to make use of our extensive Advising Program designed to offer advice and counsel in a non-threatening manner.
A Saint is not a breed for all individuals and situations! Time spent with Advisors can direct some of you to breeds more suitable for your environment thereby reducing the number of Saints that often find their way into Rescue programs because of inadequate preparation and planning. For those interested in showing, Advisors can again reduce the number of mistakes that novices frequently make.
A quarterly publication is produced, with articles about Saint Bernards, local, information, and photos and pedigrees of new titleholders (Champions, Performance and Obedience). It is a great way to get started learning about the breed and the Saint Bernard World. Information on how to subscribe and how to join the SBCA can be found by going to the Membership link.
We direct your attention to the Illustrated Commentary, acclaimed by many judges as one of the very best illustrated standards produced by some 150 U.S. breeds. Study the Illustrated Commentary prior to purchasing any puppy; talk to exhibitors and make use of the Advisors that we offer.
This site, as with any other web site, is always under development. Check back often for new additions. Please send any comments or suggestions as well as any errors you encounter to Robert Carter, our webmaster.
|If you are seeking medical advice concerning your Saint Bernard we urge you to first contact your Veterinarian as soon as possible. A Vet is trained to provide a hands-on evaluation and diagnoses of your dog's medical condition.||If you wish to discuss Saint Bernard health issues in general, or any topic related to Saints, please contact one of our Advisors. The Saint Bernard Club of America Advisors have years of experience and are more than willing to share their knowledge with you. Click here to visit the Advisors Page.||If you have purchased your dog from a reputable breeder they will also be pleased to answer your questions.

X-ray showing bloat in dog
The literature on Bloat points in many directions which has not brought breeders any closer to a solution. For these reasons we have developed a new survey that focuses on some of the factors that might contribute to its occurrence.
We need breeders: That had a dog that bloated and/or a dog that did not bloat. This survey is the joint effort of Dr. Carmen Battaglia PHd of the AKC and Dr. Cindy Otto DVM, Univ. Penn, Vet School.
Our goal is to look at conditions that are relevant to the further study of this disease. Your contribution is appreciated. A summary of the results and findings will be posted on our website www.breedingbetterdogs.com in November 2010.
